PRINCE Charles yesterday said the nation owed a “debt of gratitude” to the Windrush generation.
His video message marked 72 years since the arrival of the Caribbean settlers who helped rebuild Britain after World War Two.
The Prince of Wales said: “Today offers an opportunity to recognise the immeasurable difference that they, their children and their grandchildren have made.”
And he paid tribute to “indispensable” black medics working on the NHS frontline during the Covid pandemic.
He added: “I know the black community has been hit particularly hard by this pernicious virus.
“To those who have lost their loved ones, I can only convey my most profound sympathy.”
This week, ministers were warned that they face the grave risk of another Windrush scandal if they fail to act on a damning report into the fiasco.
Wendy Williams’ review accused the Home Office under Theresa May of failures which led to UK residents being deported.
But Ms Williams said the Home Office faced a stark choice on implementing her recommendations. If it did not, she said there was “a very grave risk of something similar happening again”.
