A source said: From the early days, the Queen really wanted to agree a smooth transition for Meghan.

“The offer would have allowed her to carry on her career but she was happy to stop acting to become a working member of the royal family.

Royal officials were frustrated that she and Harry now appear to be saying they were pressured into quitting royal life.

The historic split was announced through statements from The Queen and Buckingham Palace last Saturday.

‘A new chapter’

The Queen said: I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.

However, it is understood the ex-Suits star, 38, was happy to become a working royal and ditch TV work.

Shortly after their engagement was announced two years ago Meghan announced she was giving up acting.

She told Sky News during their first televised interview: I just see it as a change Its a new chapter, right? And also keep in mind Ive been working on my show for seven years.

I feel really proud of the work I have done there and now its time to, as you said work – work as a team with – with you (Harry).

Eighteen months on, she and Harry, 35, are no longer working royals and are beginning a new life in Canada.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment.
