The Queen, 93, first met Prince Philip in 1934, and it’s said she fell for him by the time she was 13, in 1939.

Their official engagement was announced less than 10 years later, in July 1947.

But Prince Philip, 98, had actually proposed in secret in 1946.

The Duke asked the Queen’s father, then King George, for her hand in marriage.

While he agreed, he asked for the engagement not to be made public until Princess Elizabeth was 21 the following year.

The Queen walked down the aisle to marry Philip Mountbatten, then 26, on November 20 1947.

After their marriage her new husband was styled as the Duke of Edinburgh, later becoming Prince Philip after the Queens coronation in 1952.

On her wedding day the Queen did her own make-up, but disaster struck as she was getting ready.

The couple headed to Broadlands, in Hampshire, for their honeymoon.

The Queen also recognises other couple’s wedding anniversaries, with people who have been married for 60, 65 and 70 years and every year after that eligible to receive a card of congratulations from the monarch.
