THE Prince Of Wales’s Stakes is one of the biggest races of the Flat season, let alone Royal Ascot week.

The Group 1 is live on ITV at 3.00pm and our man Jack Keene has had a good look at the seven-strong field.

Much will depend on ground conditions here, as the classy Addeybb will come right into contention is there is significant rainfall.

He did connections proud with a couple of big wins Down Under earlier this year and he is a top performer on easy ground, as he showed when second in October’s Champion Stakes over C&D.

Provided it doesn’t come up very testing, though, JAPAN ought to be hard to beat.

Aidan O’Brien’s colt improved throughout last season, going close in the Derby before winning at Royal Ascot, Longchamp and York.

He ran a cracker on awful ground when fourth in the Arc in October, and on his gutsy defeat of Crystal Ocean in the Juddmonte International he has more than enough pace to cope with the drop back to 1m2f.

That bit of speed will prove vital and there isn’t an obvious front-runner in here, which means it could get tactical. That would suit Barney Roy, who is probably at his best over slightly shorter.

He was a comfortable winner in Dubai when last sighted and he has winning form at this meeting, having taken out the St James’s Palace Stakes three years ago.

Headman and Lord North are progressive types, but both will need to take a big step forward to lower the colours of Japan. Mehdaayih and Bangkok have it all to do.
