THE Queen used to send Prince Charles away when he got ill as a child, to make sure she didnt catch it.

Princess Margarets former lady-in-waiting Lady Anne Glenconner revealed that the Queens eldest was often sent to her familys Holkham estate in Norforlk, a few miles from Sandringham.

The Queen, seen with Charles and Anne in 1952, would send Prince Charles away when he was sick as a child

Writing in her book Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown, Lady Glenconner spoke of Charles visits to her family home.

She said: When I was in my late teens, Prince Charles became like a younger brother to me, spending weeks with us at Holkham.

He would come and stay whenever he had any of the contagious childhood diseases, like chickenpox, because the Queen, having never been to school, had not been exposed to them.

But far from being an unwanted visit, Lady Glenconner revealed that Charles, who is 16 years her junior, cherished the trips, and looked forward to staying at Holkham.

Charles would be sent to stay at Holkham Hall in Norforlk, within spitting distance of Sandringham

Lady Anne Glenconner grew up at Holkham and says that Charles became like a “little brother” to her

She continued: My father taught him how to fish for eels in the lake, and when he got a bit older, my mother let him drive the Jaguar and the Mini Minor around the park, something he loved doing, sending great long thank-you letters telling her he couldnt wait to return.

Lady Glenconner went on to describe the Prince as a kind and loving little boy with her family deeply fond of him.

Lady Anne is the eldest child of the 5th Earl of Leicester.

As well as working as a Lady in Waiting for Margaret, she was also a Maid of Honour at the Queen’s coronation and is a lifelong friend of the royal family.
