IT SHOULD come as no surprise that the Queen has high standards when it comes to housekeeping and potential cleaners have to pass a bizarre test before they are hired.

According the head of royal recruitment Tracey Waterman, applicants hoping to work at Sandringham must spot a dead fly before she will consider them.

Cleaners hoping to work for the Queen must spot a dead fly that has been planted in the interview room to secure the job

Speaking on the Channel 5 documentary Sandringham: The Royals at Christmas, Waterman explains that she deliberately plants the fly in an interview room to spot whether the candidate has a good eye for detail.

She explains: The difference between housekeeper in a five-star hotel and in a royal Palace would be attention to detail.

One of the tests I like to do, to see if a candidate has potential eye for detail, is to place a dead fly, either in the fireplace or on the carpet.

Once the dead fly is placed, I then bring the candidate into the room.

I lead them into the room, quite slowly, just giving them a chance to glance at the room, have a little look at what weve got inside the room.

Bringing them to the fireplace, maybe highlighting that weve got a beautiful fireplace.

She continued: At this point Id expect them to see the dead fly, and hopefully pick it up.

Its a great test, maybe out of 10 people half the candidates will notice the fly. One out of ten will actually bend down and pick it up, thats the special housekeeper!

The test is set up for those hoping to work on the Sandrigham estate

The Queen recently advertised for a new cleaner with the successful candidate responsible for the upkeep of a “wide range of interiors and items”.

What’s more, the successful candidate will be paid 14,742 a year and work 30 hours a week from Monday to Sunday.

In order to better your chances, the Palace are specifically looking for people with “previous housekeeping experience and a sharp eye for detail.”
