WAR heroes shared their VE Day memories – over a glass champagne with Kate and Wills.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge video-called OAPs in lockdown at the Royal British Legion care home Mais House, in East Sussex.
Kate, 38, told 101-year-old former code messager Charles Ward she missed her grandmother Valerie Middleton who served as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park.
She said: “So sad she’s not here today but I’d love to speak to her more about it.”
Charles, who fought in North Africa before joining the Special Operations Executive to encrypt messages from British agents, told the couple he once passed on code from then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
Speaking after the video call he said: “The message came from Churchill I had to decipher it, re-incypher it and send it to his son in Yugoslavia to say ‘Happy Birthday’.
“And then there was another one from the son to Churchill himself to say congratulations on your speech in parliament.
“When I told William and Kate that story they giggled.”
Kate also revealed George 6, Charlotte, 5, and two-year-old Louis had been learning wartime songs during lockdown.
She told the veterans: “The school set all the children a challenge and they are currently trying to hear the lyrics of We’ll Meet Again. It’s been lovely having that playing every day”
William added: “Although we can’t be with you today everyone is thinking about you and very proud of what you achieved.”
James Pyett, 95, also chatted to the royals and haid: “When William and Kate were talking to us they asked about the end of this period we said we’d celebrate it like VE Day, but we’ll call it VC Day, Victory over Coronavirus.”
All residents at the care home are in lockdown and have not seen their families since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis.
