What happened between Ruthie Henshall and Prince Edward?
During Friday’s I’m A Celebrity episode, Ruthie opened up about her past relationship with The Queen‘s youngest son.
Speaking to fellow campmate Shane Richie on the show, the West End actress said: “Lovely bloke. And I genuinely fell in love with him.”
Ruthie revealed that Prince Edward was “a production assistant at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s [theatre]”, becoming her point of contact after getting the lead role in A Star Is Born.
She added: “He [Edward] was the one who’d call me up and say you’re rehearsing at 2 o’clock or whatever.
“And he said to me ‘would you like to come to mine and watch the film of A Star Is Born with me and you can have some dinner’.”
Ruthie ended up spending the weekend with the Prince in Windsor, where she also met his mother, The Queen, along with Princess Margaret, Prince Charles, The Queen Mother and Princess Diana.
Yet, the royal meeting wasn’t all smooth sailing, having ignore her dad’s advice to curtsy – instead shaking her hand, before getting drunk from martinis given by Charles as she tried to sing I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables.
Ruthie and Prince Edward ended up spending two years ‘solidly’ together, and another three on and off.
When did Ruthie Henshall date Prince Edward?
Ruthie’s relationship with Prince Edward made headlines across the UK with many dubbing it ‘the Prince and the showgirl’.
The pair were together during the early 90s, with Ruthie and Prince Edward being photographed together outside a restaurant in 1993
The West End star also previously revealing that she often visited him at Buckingham Palace in secret – even remarking on I’m A Celebrity they “s*****d in the bedrooms.”
But, with her then-fiance John Gordon Sinclair, Ruthie did see Prince Edward after their relationship ended by attending his wedding to Sophie Rhys Jones in 1999.
Why did they break up?
Ruthie Henshall previously revealed that the pair split for the sake of her theatre career.
She revealed in 2008: “I thin I had hopes that we could walk on in our relationship but really and truthfully I think I was very aware that I wouldn’t be able to do what I do for a living if I’d have stayed with him.
“If you think about it, I would be in the theatre [doing] eight shows a week, they’d have to check out the theatre every night, check everyone’s bags, it would be just impossible.
“There was nothing – at that stage- that was more important than what I did.”
While Prince Edward moved on with Sophie, now Countess of Wessex, Ruthie later married Tim Howar – before the couple split in 2009.
