BRASSIC’S Joe Gilgun revealed he was “living like Brad Pitt” in Hollywood after landing a role in US drama preacher.

The 36-year-old former Emmerdale actor jets back and forth between the US and the UK for work and admits his lifestyle Stateside is worlds apart from back home.

He told HOAR’s TV Mag: “It’s been strange. I go from living like Brad Pitt in these multimillion-dollar things in the States, to coming back to the house I was squatting in, which didn’t even have running water.

“Everyone was going: ‘Joe, you’ve got a load of money, you stupid ****, you could have a house!’

“About a year ago I found this number in this f***ing phone they’ve given me – it says ‘Money Man’ and it’s got a bunch of £ symbols, so I call it up and it’s the f***ing fella who’s got all my money.

“It turns out I’m f***ing wedged. I’ve had to buy a f***ing house and everything. I don’t want it! I’m happy feeding the pigeons. My happiness genuinely doesn’t come from the material world, I just like making stuff, I like being in things. I like taking a break from myself. I can’t stand myself, honestly, I just wear myself out, so being someone else affords me an opportunity to have a break away from this f***ing nightmare that never shuts up.”

Brad Pitt is Hollywood royalty

Joe, who has bi-polar disorder like his Brassic character Vinnie, also spoke candidly about substance abuse and his mental health.

He explained: “I’ve actually thrived in this lockdown. I’ve started running. I don’t even want to confess it but I’m eating quinoa. I’ve always just done what I want, I’m self-destructive – I do it with drink, with drugs and unhinged behaviour, so lockdown, all the dealers, no one’s coming out, so I can’t be a drug addict while all this is happening, so it’s really sorted me.”

The star said he needed his Sky comedy series to succeed because of the implications it would have had on him mentally if not.

Joe was relieved Sky One’s Brassic was a big success

“It’s autobiographical, so if people had thought it was rubbish, it would have had serious mental health implications for me,” he said.

Its success has him ready to make more original material and he’s not lacking in ideas.

“I don’t want to sound like an enormous ****, but I’ve got a wealth of ideas,” he said. “I smoke a lot of dope, I sit on my own and think endlessly. I obsessively write, I don’t have a lot of mates, I don’t
have a girlfriend – I don’t get many matches on Tinder, it’s full of lying sociopaths – I’m like a bit of a loser who feeds the pigeons.

“I look like a f***ing idiot, my personality is a bit intense and I wouldn’t blame someone for thinking I was f***ing stupid, but I’m not. I’ve come up with a film and I’ve got a lot of ideas, not all comedy.”
