CORONATION Street fans were cheering in their living rooms tonight as Ed Bailey finally stood up to racist bistro boss Don in an epic takedown.

The character confronted the idiot at the venue’s fancy launch party after hearing him looking over at him sneering: “You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.”

Ed Bailey fronted up to racist bistro boss Don – and viewers were cheering his speech

But Ed clocked exactly what he meant, fronting up to him, saying: “Excuse me? What did you just say? I heard what you said. So did my wife, my sons, my granddaughter.

“But I don’t think everyone else did. Would you mind saying it again? Say it again. Come on, we all need a good laugh.”

And when told it wasn’t the moment for a row, Ed shot back: “When it the right time and place to face up to a racist?

Don insisted: “I’m not racist.”

Don was reduced to mumbling an apology after Ed’s impassioned speech
There was shock at the bistro as it was revealed what he had said

But Ed replied: “Ahh, you were just having a laugh. I was being too sensitive. I am so weary – I’ve had a lifetime fighting people calling me names and I have heard every name and every stupid comment you can think of.

“I’ve had people like you ask me if I can read, if I went to school, if I can swim. I’ve had people like you assume I’m a criminal, that I can get them stolen goods or ganja.

“I’ve been asked if I came in on the Windrush. I’ve been asked what I eat. What cricket team I support. I have heard it all a thousand times. But I don’t think any of these good people in here have… so let’s hear it again one more time.”

When Don stayed silent, Ed roared: “No? Then I will say it for him. He said: ‘If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.’”

Many viewers applauded Ed’s rousing speech in Friday night’s episode

To hushed shock around the room, he added: “As a wise young man once said to me, if I give up, then I’ve just leaving the fight for someone else. So I’m not giving up, Don.”

The bistro manager insisted: “A little joke and you’re kicking off like this – it’s ridiculous” but added quietly: “I’m sorry.”

Ed rejected it out of hand saying: “Shove your apology – it’s as pathetic as you are.” Then, sweeping out with his family, he concluded: “Let’s go.”

Viewers were delighted, with one posting: “Loved ed in @itvcorrie had tears when he stood up to the racist idiot . Brilliant episode.”

Another wrote: “Just seen the best scene ever in coronation street, Ed Bailey standing up to a racist, i actually clapped after he shown up a guy he’d been working for, a the racist he was, bravo Corrie, he’s just got to help his son now.”

In tonight’s scenes, Ray told Ed that Don wasn’t happy with his handiwork and that he was refusing to pay Ed’s invoice unless he made some changes.
