CORONATION Street viewers were left in hysterics last night as Christmas tracks sound-tracked the violent prison riot.

As all hell broke loose inside the jail when prisoners overran the guards, the likes of The Ronettes’ Sleigh Ride played merrily over the top.

Coronation Street viewers were left in hysterics last night as Christmas tracks sound-tracked the violent prison riot

The contrast between the visuals and the soundtrack wasn’t lost on fans, who shared their amusement on Twitter.

One wrote: “never thought id be watching a prison riot with christmas tunes playing in the background this is amazing #corrie.”

A second posted: “I have to be honest, witnessing a prison riot to the strains of Sleigh Ride in October is not something I could have predicted. #Corrie.”

Another shared: “im sorry but i cant not laugh at the fact that they put christmas music over a prison riot #Corrie.”

David Platt was given the chance to exact revenge on his attacker

The scenes left one confused, writing: “Just walked in to see a massive prison riot set to a lovely festive Christmas Carol and my head went WTF?!”

And there was more laughter from this user: “Absolute LOL at Xmas music over a prison riot #corrie.”

It’s not the first time upbeat songs have been used to soundtrack violence for dramatic effect.

Reservoir Dogs famously played Stuck In The Middle With You over its torture scene, while in American Psycho Christian Bale’s Patrick Bateman kills commits a murder while listening to Huey Lewis And The News’s Hip To Be Square.

One viewer immediately spotted the similarity to Martin Scorcese’s mob classic Goodfellas, sharing: “That prison riot in Corrie was so entertainingly daft. They even did that thing from Goodfellas where they juxtapose pleasant music over the top of it. That’s Goodfellas from 1990 guys.”

Rapist Josh showed no remorse for abusing David

Last night saw a riot kick off at the prison where David Platt is serving time for his part in stealing money from Audrey Roberts.

And in the melee David was stunned when rapist Josh Tucker was dragged into his cell by Abe and Tez and handed a pair of scissors.

But the hairdresser whos played by Jack P Shepherd in the ITV soap – couldnt go through with killing Josh who raped him in disturbing scenes last year.

Instead he actually helped Josh escape from Abe and Tez who were set on stabbing him.

David barricaded a stunned Josh in a room together where he finally admitted that he raped him.

Inmates trashed the prison

But things took a sinister turn when a clearly unrepentant Josh told David that hed be out of prison soon and would do it again.

He then made a comment about Davids adopted son, Max, asking him how old he is now.

This made David snap and lunge at Josh.

The next thing we saw was Davids fiance, Shona Ramsay, taking a call from him.

He told her that Josh had been stabbed and that he needed a lawyer.

David beat Josh in a cell fight

But when Shona asked David if he did it, he went quiet as a guard came in and took him away for questioning.

So did David stab Josh? Spoilers have revealed that it wasnt actually him who attacked Josh.

In tomorrows episodes, David will swear to Shona that the assault on Josh had nothing to do with him.

Shona isnt convinced, however.

And things dont look very good for David when Max shows Shona a video taken from inside the prison during the riot.

The clip shows Josh collapsing from a stab wound, while David is nearby.

Josh caused controversy on the cobbles last year when he drugged and raped David on a lads night out.

David fell to pieces after the attack but finally admitted to Shona what had happened after Aidan Connor took his own life.
