The character will be rushed to hospital with the life threatening condition, leaving his family terrified.

And those who have been watching the scenes unfold are concerned it could be the end of the 87-year-olds time on the show.

Bill appeared in the debut episode of the ITV soap and viewers were hoping he would stick around until the 60 year anniversary next year.

Discussing his potential exit, one fan speculated: This past couple of episodes Ken has had a bad cough. Could be nothing but at his age you never know.

Another agreed adding: I did wonder whether it has been scripted as part of his exit storyline? Maybe Ken has developed a terminal illness?

While someone else wrote: I thought the cough would lead to discovery of a nasty condition.

Bill however recently insisted he has no plan to leave the show, telling The Weekly news: I am never sure where Ken is going!

“He has had many adventures through the years and I hope he will be going strong and having some good storylines in the years ahead…

“I have no plans to retire or do anything revolutionary. I like being Ken Barlow, I like being a part of the Coronation Street family and success story so I have no plans to call it a day.”

And discussing the 60th birthday celebrations, he added: “I am looking forward to the party. We did a special live episode when the Street was 50 so I am sure there will be something extra special this time round.
