CORONATION Street has been hit by Ofcom complaints following a scene where Evelyn mocked Hope’s therapy treatment after she was charged with arson.

Viewers weren’t happy with the ITV soap after feisty grandmother Evelyn – played by Maureen Lipman – said a firmer approach was needed to teach the child right from wrong.

Viewers have seen Evelyn acting as Hope’s appropriate adult during meetings with police after she set fire to Alina Pop’s baby cot almost killing her.

She said to Hope’s frustrated dad Tyrone: “She’s had play therapy, touchy, feely rubbish, new age, but she needs something long-term. Teach her right from wrong.”

The episode aired on August 16th and prompted a wave of complaints to Ofcom, with 275 viewers contacting the telly watchdog.

Hope’s parents Tyrone and Fiz have been left devastated after she was arrested for almost killing Alina and is now being dragged through the courts.

Hope has been banned from playing with her cousins after admitting she set light to the cot but said she never meant to harm anyone.

Despite Evelyn attracting complaints, she surprised viewers last week by showing her soft side.

Evelyn had a heart to heart with Alina and spoke about the importance of family.

Shocked viewers were pleasantly surprised with her kinder side.

One wrote: “Evelyn being kind is strange…”

Another posted: “It’s weird seeing Evelyn being nice.”

A third added: “Haha yeah it is weird seeing Evelyn being nice.”

“Evelyn came to the street as a selfish, deceiving old dragon. From that to now be a caring, kind old lady, a shoulder to cry on and one of the most lovable characters,” a fourth shared.
