CORONATION Street is planning a series of documentaries about its best loved legends.

The ITV soap is currently shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic with the channel only having enough episodes banked to last until the summer.

Bet will feature in one of the episodes

It has cut down to just three episodes per week in an effort to stay on air for as long as possible.

But now bosses have decided to help plug the gap with a four special episodes looking back at some of Weatherfield’s most memorable characters.

The longest-serving character in television history, Ken Barlow is one of the choices while leopard print legend Bet Lynch is another.

A source told the Sunday Mirror: “During these difficult times, ITV bosses thought, ‘What better to lift the spirits than some of the most memorable moments in Corrie history?’

Ken will also feature in one episode

“It also gives them the chance to celebrate their many stars, including Ken Barlow – the longest-running soap star in the world.

“With filming suspended, this is a way of getting around the current restrictions as a lot can be pulled from archives and interviews at home.”

The new documentaries will come following the success of last year’s Coronation Street Icons: Audrey Roberts – 40 Fabulous Years.

That hour-long episode honoured Audrey actress Sue Nicholls’ 40 year career on the soap and all her iconic moments.

It coincided with Sue being honoured at the British Soap Awards for the same.

This year’s awards have been cancelled but will return in 2021.
