Speaking to Lorraine Kelly about the storyline, Joe said: I have no idea how long I have left, it is open-ended.

The character Im playing is finite, Ill never be a regular on Corrie thats sure. My role will come to an end.

Joe added he had his doubts about playing such an awful character, but he hopes that the storyline will help victims like Paul.

He said: “Talk about being thrown into the deep end, but it’s not just another acting job – it comes with a responsibility to raise awareness on male sexual abuse.

“I worked very closely with Survivors Manchester, which is a great charity.

There’s a lot of pressure to get it right, you can’t play the panto villain because it cheapens it.”

Corrie producer Iain MacLeod previously saidof the harrowing storyline: “Gemma and Pauls family background has always been fascinating to me – the inseparable bond of twins but with a huge fault-line down the middle, which weve hinted at but never explained.

“This story sensitively explores something that is tragically all too common in families in the real world and will highlight the way these painful events still reverberate many years later.

“It will, I hope, allow people who have survived similar abuse and perhaps suffered in silence to find their voice and speak up.”
