Speaking in detail about his exit, the star said it was the best way the soap could have ended their love story.

After the actress was asked by Inside Soap if she was pleased with how bosses killed off Johnny, she said yes.

Without a thought, she said: “Oh God, yes!”

Explaining, the star went on: “It told their love story and brought it full circle.

“He gave her the opportunity to have a different life when she was just a cleaner in the factor, and he was her knight in shining armor ’till the very end.”

She added that she was pleased he didn’t “leave in the back of a taxi”.

Sally added: “Often characters leave in the back of a taxi and that’s a little — yet no one is going to float away down a storm pipe again in Corrie history.”

According to Sally, Richard was “thrilled to bits” with his departure from the British soap.

Sally’s character is now “stressed” and “very up and down,” says the actress as viewers have been watching Jenny struggle to do Johnny’s eulogy.

On how her character is feeling, she explained: “She wants to find the perfect words for his eulogy, and she doesn’t know whether she’s got it right.

“Jenny’s beating herself over leaving the marriage, as she did love Johnny, so she doesn’t want to let him down.”

Johnny and Jenny were estranged but during his final moments, he declared his love for her.

He died drowning after saving Jenny from the old sewer system.

After realising Johnny was dying,

Jenny shouted: “Johnny please you just need to hold on. I love you.”

After telling Jenny he loved her too, Johnny slipped away under the water leaving Jenny screaming in anguish.

In real life, Sally lives in a stunning family home in London with her husband Nick Rhodes and their sons Louis and James.
