VETERAN actress Maureen Lipman is to be made a dame in the Queen’s birthday honours, it was reported last night.

The star, 74, has enjoyed a 50-year career in TV and film including roles in Up the Junction, The Pianist, Educating Rita. Smiley’s People and sitcom Agony.

She has also appeared in Coronation Street and was well known for her role in the BT adverts of the 1980s.

The Times said Maureen will be recognised for her services to art and charity. Her damehood comes 21 years after she was made a CBE.

It comes days after reports that former Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry, 85, will also be made a dame.

Last year before the general election, Maureen Lipman launched a blistering attack on Jeremy Corbyn as she recorded a mock version of her iconic BT advert and claimed he had an ‘ology in extremism’.

In an astonishing indictment the life-long Labour supporter listed a raft of reasons why she won’t be voting for the party this time around in a mock phone call with her friend Nora.

Maureen, who is currently starring in Coronation Street as Evelyn Plummer, condemned the “bullying, hectoring and driving out of good Jewish Labour MPs” as she blasts: “They’re not socialists, you know what they are, Nora? They’re extremists.”

She also blasted the Labour Party’s plan to “tax us on the meagre savings we’ve got for our grandchildren”.
