CORONATION Street fans were left in tears tonight after a sombre New Year’s Eve where Ken Barlow led a Champagne toast to the late Sinead Tinker.

The cobbles veteran was among the characters who came around to spread some good cheer to lonely Daniel Osbourne, who was looking after baby Bertie.

Daniel was emotional as they paid tribute to Sinead

And as midnight struck, he raised a glass of the bubbly he’d brought round to Daniel’s wife, who died of cancer in October.

At Nat King Cole’s song Unforgettable played, Ken led the group, saying: “Right. To Sinead.”

Daniel, who was sat down with Bertie, followed suit, adding: “To Mummy” before kissing the tot’s head.

He had been surprised at home by the gang, who trooped up his stairs as he marvelled: “What are you all doing here?”

And as half the Street arrived to see in 2020, Peter Barlow told him: “You didn’t think we were going to leave you both on your own at new year, did you?”

Daniel answered: “Have you all not got somewhere better to be?”

But they settled in for the night – before paying the emotional tribute to Sinead.

Meanwhile, across town, David Platt was sitting at Shona’s bedside holding her hand as she remained on a life-support machine.

Lying on a hospital bed with brain damage in the wake of a shooting during Derek’s gun rampage, she was seen beside a card begging: “Shona please wake up!”

It was a fitting end to the year for the soap, which has been dominated by tragedy, most notably the death of Sinead from cervical cancer.

But it was too much for some fans who tweeted: “To mummy #corrie @itvcorrie @Rob_Mallard @KatiexMcGlynn”

Another wrote: “corrie out here KILLING ME”

Sinead was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year – just after discovering she was pregnant.

She decided not to have chemotherapy, instead turning to alternative medicines, but after giving birth to Bertie, she was told her cancer had spread.

The character then went through an intensive course of chemo and looked like she was cancer-free following a check-up scan just a few months ago.

However, she did not survive, with 26-year-old actress Katie McGlynn leaving the soap after seven years.
