EASTENDERS star James Bye has admitted he almost broke co-star Max Bowden’s neck before shooting a violent scene.

The actor – who plays Martin Fowler in the BBC soap – was preparing for the scene where Ben dangled Martin over a bridge to scare him into doing his bidding.

James almost broke Max’s neck before the big scene

But as they larked around beforehand, James pulled Max up from the floor with nearly fatal consequences.

James told HOAR Online: “We did one scene, me and Max, and I nearly broke his neck, didn’t I?”

Max then added: “It wasn’t in action, that’s why. Not even in rehearsals, just as we were about to go ”

James replied: “I pulled him up a little prematurely, and he weren’t ready and he snapped his neck, and we had a little bit of a fallout didn’t we.”

The actors also joke about who is the better recast

He added, joking: “He got all cocky on set like, ‘I’m the new Ben, I’m gonna take you down’ just to let him know who’s been there longer, and who’s the better recast…”

James also spoke about Martins dark side: “Its probably the best stuff Ive had since Ive been on the show to be honest. Its a gift.

“I had a meeting with Jon and Kate and they sort of floated the idea.

“I was a bit unsure of how we were going to get from the fruit and veg man until that point, and I think that in terms of a journey for the character its been so nice for the audience to see it happen in front of them, rather than me just coming back from Martin and Stacey doing the runner and suddenly being this bad boy, its nice to see him and sort of spiral out of control.”

Senior Executive producer Kate Oates added: “James is actually being quite modest there because one of the reasons we had this idea initially was we got together for a bit of a character chat, and James mentioned this thing when it was Martin with a different head how he dangled Ben over the railway bridge, and I hadnt seen that so, like James was saying, him and Max were talking about it, and I just thought it was brilliant.”
