EastEnders’ Maddy Hill has opened up about her anxiety about returning to the soap after five years

After Maddy thanked fans for watching her return to the BBC’s popular soap EastEnders, she admitted how “getting recognised in public for playing her is really difficult.”

Keeping the post somewhat light-hearted, the 31-year-old said she “buried” her anxiety “in true human fashion.”

She explained, “Reason I thought I’d write about this here even though I don’t think I’ve ever posted about anything like this is that me going back on screen has timed exactly with us all emerging from lockdown”.

Realising she is not alone, Maddy continued, “Surely the majority of people are feeling some anxiety around socialising again?”

The actress has also starred in BBC medical drama Casualty as Ruby Spark

“There’s also the feeling of just being socially rusty and doing/ saying weird s**t around other people that makes you feel like a plonker and then go and berate yourself in the pub toilets whilst you’re touching up your make up for the twentieth time in an hour and giving yourself crazy eyebrows that you spent 5 hours painting on in the first place because you’ve forgotten how to do makeup.

“Add to that the fact that absolutely s**t all has actually happened in the last year (apart from really awful loss/ trauma for so many) so knowing that your chat is going to be utterly barren aaaaaaand you’ve got a recipe for anxiety”.

Bringing a sense of togetherness, Maddy signed off: “Anyway. Point being – I feel y’all, I love y’all, and we’re all mad anxious and awkward together.”

On-screen dad Danny Dyer showed his support and commented, “My girl,” alongside two heart emojis.

Co-star Emma Barton, who plays Honey Mitchell, also commented, “Fabulous you”.

Emmerdale actress, Natalie Anne Jamison, couldn’t resist praising her friend’s eyebrow game.

She gushed, “Love you Mads!! (Except not for a second do I accept that your brows are not anything but perfect! You’ve been an eyebrow wizard since the day we met – need ya to sort mine TBH)”.

Others admired the actress’ openness on her latest Instagram post. They said, “yes babe. I feel you and love you for saying thisssssss realness”.

Her character has undergone an amazing makeover

“Very pleased Nancy is back on the square,” one fan said,

“I love this, the caption is SO relatable 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 my face lit up when you came onscreen last night, you brought the magic and sparkle back to the Carter clan. we’ve missed you!!!!!! keep smashing it. X”

But what’s next for Nancy after five years away from the square?

Some fans believe she has spilt from boyfriend Tamwar Masood (Hiten Patel).

In her first episode since returning, we saw Nancy take a discreet phone call querying about money with Tamwar.

Her urgent manner sounded like she desperately needed the money. But what for?

A spoiler revealed a secretive package will be delivered to the Queen Victoria pub, raising suspicions with Nancy’s dad Mick Carter (Danny Dyer).

A war between Nancy and her newly-found sister Frankie has been teased as Nancy learns Frankie was given her old bedroom. Will there be a rift in the Carter household?

EastEnders executive producer, Jon Sen, expressed his excitement in welcoming Maddy back.

He said: “We’re delighted to have Maddy back and I can’t wait for audiences to see what’s in store for Nancy.”

He continued, “There’s a lot of mystery surrounding her return and she’s coming back to a family that have been through a very difficult year – things are definitely not as Nancy left them. Maddy is a fantastic actor and we feel very lucky to have her back in Walford.”

EastEnders continues on BBC One on Thursday at 7.30pm
