Sally explained: “As soon as I don’t enjoy my role any more, I’ll leave. I’m a firm believer in doing what makes you happy.

“Who knows, I might get killed off – or Steven Spielberg might knock on the door. I don’t want to say I’ll be there for ever, because you don’t know what is around the corner.”

Speaking to Prima magazine, the actress continued:  “I never imagined I’d play Sally for as long as I have. It was the ideal job when my kids were little as I live 20 minutes from the studio, so I was always home for bedtime.”

It seems she has a little while longer on the Cobbles though, as she added: “But three decades on, I still enjoy it as much as when I started. From the cast and camera people to the make-up artists, we’ve grown up with one another and been there for life’s milestones – it’s like we’re a family.”

She is now married to Tim Metcalfe, played by Joe Duttine.

In 2009 her soap character was diagnosed with breast cancer so she was inspired to check her breasts and was shocked to discover she had the disease in real life.

In the soap Sally kept her diagnosis a secret but confessed it to her daughters and cheating husband Kevin (who was having an affair with Molly) on Christmas day.

Sally took a six month break from the soap to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy and returned in July 2010.

In 2020 she took part in Dancing On Ice – in a rare departure from her time on the Cobbles.
