THE dust has barely settled on its first season, but The Girl Before viewers are already begging the BBC for a second series.

Fans of the BBC One thriller heaped praise on the series for its “shocking” twist in the finale.

The Girl Before starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw on BBC One and HBO Max

The Girl Before starring Eastenders’ alumni, Jessica Plummer and Ben Hardy, followed the story of Jane, played by Loki’s Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

Based on the novel of the same name by JP Delaney, Jane is looking for a place to rent, but ends up stumbling upon a “rental opportunity of a lifetime”.

She is able to move into a luxurious, minimalist house known as ‘One Folgate Street.

However, there’s one condition, that she abides by a long list of rules laid out by her landlord, Edward, an “enigmatic architect” played by David Oyelowo.

Everything turns out to be more complicated than they first appeared.

Jane makes a shocking discovery that reveals details about the previous occupant, Emma (Plummer), a woman similar to Jane herself.

There are striking similarities between the two women, which leads Jane to question just how much their lives overlap.

Fans suspected throughout the series that Edward had murdered Jane, especially after it was revealed in the finale that he cause the accident that killed his first wife and son.

But as the finale rolled on, it became more apparent that Emma’s ex, Simon (Hardy), was hiding a dark secret.

Not only did fans watch as Jane – who was also pregnant with Edward’s baby – escape Simon’s psychopathic clutches, but also pull the ultimate power move on Edward.

She abandoned him at the medical clinic where he had taken her to get an abortion and went on to live a full life with her new baby.

Jane recommended Edward get therapy to ‘heal’ and ‘move on from his past’, advice he surprisingly heeded.

While some fans guessed that Simon was the killer all along, many praised the multiple twists in the finale.

“So many twists and turns in ‘The Girl Before’. Didn’t see that ending coming. Compelling thriller,” wrote one happy fan.

Another added: “#TheGirlBefore was absolute madness. That ending!”

And a third wrote: “I found #TheGirlBefore compelling. Alarm bells started to ring when Simon brought the same bouquet for Jane that he’d previously been leaving for the late Emma.”

All episode of theThe Girl Before are available on BBC iPlayer.

Many fans guessed correctly that Simon (Ben Hardy) was the bad guy all along
