SOAP romances are not just found on screen – with many of our favourite Emmerdale stars finding love with one another in real life.

In true soap opera style, Emmerdale actors Duncan Preston and Susan Penhaligon have got married, divorced and are now back together.

Duncan Preston, best known for playing Laurel Thomas’ father Doug Potts in the soap from 2007 until 2011 and 2014 until 2020, married Susan Penhaligon back in 1986. 

Susan starred in Emmerdale as Jean Hope, the first wife of Bob Hope, in 2006.

Duncan and Susan split in 1992 and got a divorce – but seriously regretted it. 

The pair got their fairytale ending when they reconciled in 1997, but they are yet to get remarried.

As well as his on-and-off appearances in Emmerdale, Duncan has starred in shows such as Holby City, Peak Practice and Surgical Spirit.

Susan is also known for playing Helen Barker in the sitcom A Fine Romance.

She has also appeared in films including The Land That Time Forgot, The Uncanny and Under Milk Wood.

The loved up Emmerdale stars are not the only soap couples who fell for each other.

Emmerdale’s Charley Webb and Matthew Wolfenden who play Debbie Dingle and David Metcalfe, married in 2018 and are parents to Buster, 11, Bowie, five and one-year-old Ace Gene.

Emmerdale favourites Jeff Hordley and Zoe Henry married in 2003 and have two children together.

Another couple who have found love in the Dales are Lesley Dunlop and Chris Chittell, who play Brenda Hope and Eric Pollard.

The pair fell for each other in real life long before their characters started up a romance on screen.
