TRAVELLERS have invaded Emmerdale and set up camp next to ITV– causing real-life drama outside the studios where the soap is filmed.

The travellers set up camp in a field next to ITV’s HQ in Leeds, West Yorkshire, which has a giant “Emmerdale” sign next to its corporate logo.

More than a dozen caravans along with cars and trailers rolled up just a stones throw from building housing the sets where all the internal scenes are filmed.

The field near Kirkstall Road was jammed with vehicles, many of them clustered together despite social distancing rules.

The travellers abruptly broke camp and departed – leaving one of the caravans blazing in the field.

A pall of smoke rose above the trees and drifted over the city’s busy ring roads, causing a hazard to motorists.

Firefighters battled to control the flames and police were called out to investigate.

The caravan was gutted and left a blackened heap near the treeline.

Filming of the soap had been paused in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

After filming for the soaps was stopped, ITV reduced the number of episodes being aired each week to three in an effort to make the content they had already filmed last longer.

ITV later announced a phased return to shooting to ensure the series would remain on air.
