CALL of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is getting remastered – and the juiced-up classic could be out very soon.

We’ve got all the news and rumours ahead of the controversial game’s rumoured release across the globe today.

Several screen grabs from the game leaked online on Monday

What is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) was a first-person shooter that arrived back in November 2009.

It was the sixth Call of Duty game, and remains one of the most popular entries to date.

Infinity Ward released the game on Windows, PS3 and Xbox 360 – but it could be landing on newer consoles very soon.

Rumour has it that publisher Activision has a Modern Warfare 2 remaster in the works, which could bring the old game up-to-date with next-gen graphics.

HOAR understands the game will hit the Microsoft and PlayStation stores at 6pm BST on Tuesday

MW2 remastered news – what we know so far

Activision has kept tight-lipped about the project, but that hasn’t stopped rumours and leaks from running amok.

The standalone game is a spruced up re-release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 with better graphics.

The download only features the Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) campaign mode – meaning no online multiplayer.

Instead, the game’s multiplayer maps will be made available on the latest CoD title, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), alongside its normal maps.

That’s to ensure that releasing the remastered game won’t split the fan base by encouraging some to abandon the newer title’s multiplayer mode in order to indulge their nostalgic side.

Players will be able to play MW2 remastered on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, HOAR understands.

You’ll be free to download it separately without needing to own a copy of the latest CoD game.

The game will hit the PlayStation Store this evening

MW2 remastered price and release date on PS4 and Xbox One

HOAR understands that MW2 remastered will appear on the PlayStation store at 6pm BST (1pm ET) today (March 31).

It will be available for Xbox One and PC 30 days later, on April 30.

That’s due to an exclusive deal between CoD and Sony that means PlayStation gamers get the title first.

The official page for MW2 remastered went up on the German PlayStation Store on Monday.

It lists a price set at €25 (around £22), and states the campaign has been “completely remastered with improved textures, animations, physical rendering, HDR lighting, and more”.

The remastered title is expected to set gamers back around £20

The original Modern Wafare 2

Released by US developer Activsion in 2009, the original MW2 won critical acclaim for its slick campaign and hugely popular multiplayer mode.

The game followed Task Force 141, a special forces unit hunted the leader of a Russian ultranationalist party.

It sparked controversy for a mission in which you mow down innocent citizens in an airport as part of a false-flag operation.

Named No Russian, the mission was criticised by many for its violence and it was subject to censorship in several countries.

Developers did offer gamers an opportunity to skip the mission – or complete it without firing a single bullet.

In other news, Call of Duty Modern Warfare recently added a new Fortnite-style game mode called Warzone.

Last month a Call of Duty YouTube star revealed his top tips to help you dominate multiplayer mode.

HOAR described Modern Warfare as “thrilling but not perfect” in our comprehensive review last year.
