THE NEXT Halo video game may have a free multiplayer mode that players can tuck into even if they haven’t bought a disc.
The hotly-anticipated Halo Infinite is out later this year and will also support 120fps, according to a listing posted by an Irish online store.
A webpage on toy and game retailer Smyths inadvertently leaked details of the game this week, The Verge reports.
“The legendary Halo series returns with the most expansive Master Chief campaign yet and a groundbreaking free-to-play multiplayer experience,” read the listing for Halo Infinite posted by Smyths Toys Superstores.
“Enjoy up to 120 FPS and greatly reduced load times creating seamless gameplay with Xbox Series X.”
The page, posted by the Irish version of Smyths, was quickly taken down, but not before it was spotted by eagle-eyed web users.
Plans from 343 studios to make the multiplayer free were later backed up by trusted Halo leaker Klobrille.
He also corroborated claims the game would run at 120fps. Fps stands for frames per second and is related to the smoothness of gameplay visuals.
The higher the fps, the smoother the experience. Most console games today run at a maximum of 60fps.
Switching to a free-to-play multiplayer mode would make some sense for the Halo series.
Infinity Ward has found great success after launching Call of Duty Warzone with a free multiplayer mode earlier this year.
In that case, gamers can download and play the online-only battle royale shooter without paying a penny.
Infinity Ward makes money from Warzone with in-game purchases for cosmetic items, tokens for experience points and more.
Halo Infinite will launch with Microsoft’s new console, the Xbox Series X, later this year.
Microsoft unveiled the Series X last year and will release the console in the run up to Christmas 2020.
The contraption will apparently run games at 4K resolution – double that of HD – with the possibility of running 8K.
It will also process games faster so as to “eliminate” loading times.
