GAMERS picking up the PlayStation 5 when it launches later this year will be able to play older PlayStation titles on the console.

The powerful machine will play all of the top 100 PS4 games, ranked by playtime, at launch, according to Sony.

That means games like GTA 5 and Fortnite will be available to play from day one.

The PS5 is due out just before Christmas 2020 and promises a slew of new next-gen games with gorgeous graphics.

However, those who wish to play popular older PlayStation titles will also be catered for, the firm’s Mark Cerny said during a conference on Wednesday.

The team behind the console is testing and tweaking PS4 games on it on a “title-by-title” basis, Mark said.

Sony recently unveiled its PS5 logo, which is very similar to the PS4 logo

That’s because the huge demands placed on games by the PS5 means the code of some can’t handle a straight port.

However, Mark assured those watching that testing was going well.

“Running PS4 titles at boosted frequencies has also added complexity”, Mark explained.

“The boost is truly massive this time around and some game code just can’t handle it. Testing has to be done on a title by title basis.”

Sony has previously stated the PS5 would be backwards compatible with PS4 games.

The tech titan will know that fans are keen to play their old games on the new console if possible.

The company drew harsh criticism from gamers after it was revealed the PS4 was not backwards compatible, rendering PS3 discs largely useless.

Microsoft, Sony’s biggest rival, has bet big on backwards compatibility.

Its upcoming Xbox Series X, also due out just before Christmas, will be able to play Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, according to the company.

The Xbox One is compatible with a raft of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles.

The PS5 is the main rival for Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Series X, kicking off another decade of console wars.

Microsoft also held a conference yesterday to unveil some of the specs of the Series X.
